"THE CONTEMPORARY NEW MEXICO LANDSCAPE"

2021 SHOW

I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for ten formative years from 1970 to 1980. During that time, I developed a deep and enduring appreciation of the New Mexico landscape. As a teenager, I spent time hiking, climbing, and absorbing the colors, textures, and ruggedness of the mountains and mesas. The Sandia Mountains were a primary focus, but I found these qualities in every corner of the state.

New Mexico landscapes are a treasure of unique colors and textures, vastness of open land sharing space with the mountains, and of course, the ever changing atmosphere. One location takes on many moods depending on the light. Capturing the effects of light is a constant theme in all my paintings, and New Mexico offers an abundance of painting subjects. When I first began to truly appreciate these effects as an artist, I was awestruck by the variations of colors from deep shadowy purples and greens to intense pinks, oranges, and yellows. And when the sun transitions, new colors appear.

In this exhibit, I strive to capture not only the intense light but also the varying textures and colors of the massive boulders, trees, brush, etc. The challenge is to capture the viewer's eye with abstract edges and bold strokes of color to convey a sense of "being there." I view the New Mexico landscape as a combination of unique abstract shapes and edges. So as I paint, I keep this in mind when applying paint or pastel to canvas or paper. For those new to the New Mexico landscape, I hope this exhibit sparks a growing interest. For those more familiar, I hope this show captures similar emotions and memories!

All paintings are for sale. Please email for prices and shipping information.
